Makeup Staples and Holy Grails
Posted on 20 April 2018
You've asked, and I've listened! Below are my all time makeup FAVES. And by faves, I mean I've been using them for a hot minute and will be using them till the the day I'm placed in my coffin. No but really, they're life changing.
Did anyone ever watch NikkieTutorial's video of how she accidentally discovered that the Nivea Men's Shave Balm was the most bomb primer ever? Yeah well thanks to her, I STILL use this stuff and it's STILL amazing. It has Glycerine in it which basically makes any product that is set on top of it, stick hardcore. It's a great moisturizer as well, and also has chamomile and witch hazel which is great if you have sensitive skin.
Technically NOT a foundation, but it has such good build-able coverage that basically makes it a foundation in my book. When I tell you this stuff is perfect for daytime, it's PERFECT for daytime. I've been using this for the past 3 years and have zero complaints. It has SPF, anti-aging properties, and lasts all day. It really lives up to its name - your skin but better, literally.
I wear shade Medium.
If you're friends with me, then I've probably gotten you hooked on this stuff. I discovered this back in early 2014 and it's legitimately my HOLY-GRAIL FOUNDATION. I'm extremely picky with foundations, and whenever I decide to go out on a whim and try a new one, it never fails that I alwaysssssssss come back to this one. Nothing compares. Aside from having the most flawless finish (I literally get asked almost every other time I'm out what foundation I'm wearing), it lasts ALLLLLLL day/night. No joke. When I invest in a foundation, my main priority is it needs to last or I'm tossing it in the trash (AKA returning it at Sephora and getting my money back). It also builds up to FULL coverage, crazy right? But the best part is, it is so freakin lightweight. I hate foundations that make me feel like I have five solid pounds of clay on my face. Ugh no thanks.
You can apply this directly on your face, which is what I used to do up until I started getting lash extensions two years ago. But, a damp beauty blender will do the same job.
*Speaking of beauty blenders, my favorite is the PRO (the black one). I used to use the pink, but honestly I love this one way more. I don't know if it's just me or in my head, but I find it gives off a way more flawless finish than the other beauty blenders. I use the bottom to apply foundation and the pointy tip to apply concealer.
I wear shade Medium.
This foundation is relatively new to my routine; I've only been using it for a little over a month, but so far so good! Again, it's very hard for me to find a foundation I like and I really am a fan of this one. It's great for daytime as it has SPF 15 which is a huge plus. But lately I've been using it ON TOP of the airbrush foundation for a more velvety finish. It adds the perfect finishing touch - so pretty!
I wear shade Natural 4.
I am here to say that the Tarte Shape Tape lives up to its hype. Seriously, no concealer has ever given me such good coverage nor lasted as long. I've gone through three tubes of this already, and can't wait to stock up on a fourth! To make your concealer A+ make sure to put an eye cream on beforehand. My two go-tos are the OLEHENRIKSEN Banana Bright Eye Cream and the Origins GinZing Eye Cream (this one is PERFECT for no make-up days as it illuminates your under eyes - you legit don't even need concealer).
I wear shade Light Medium Honey.
I also use Lancome's Teint Idole Ultra Wear Camouflage Concealer to hide any blemishes and it works like a charm.
This Marc Jacobs Beauty Glow Stick is a game changer. I love rubbing this in to the high points of my cheeks and bridge of my noise BEFORE applying foundation. It glistens through and gives the most natural glow.
I don't like using TOO much powder because that's when your makeup starts to look cakey. So I love applying this It Cosmetics Poreless Airbrush Pressed Powder very lightly and instead of sweeping it across my face, I press the product into my skin.
And of course, the Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder is a necessity, no questions asked. I looooove baking with this (I use the puff to apply a heavy amount under my eyes, between eyebrows, on smile lines, and below my contour, leave it on for 10 minutes then brush off the excess). If you want your concealer to last, make sure you use this.
I only contour with Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Bronzer as it's matte and the perfect shade. It smells incredible too. Make sure when you contour, you're using a MATTE bronzer.
So I haven't worn mascara in God only knows how long because of lash extensions (btw, if you want to cut time on your makeup routine GET LASH EXTENSIONS. THEY'RE LIFE CHANGING AND YOU LITERALLY WAKE UP EVERY DAY FEELING PRETTY. JUST DO IT. AND IF YOU NEED A LASH TECH, I'M YOUR GIRL). However, before I started lash extensions, I used this Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Mascara and it made my lashes soooooo freakin long and didn't run.
I can't speak for my top lashes, but my bottom lashes are HELLA LONG thanks to YSL's The Shock Volumizing Mascara. I have yet to find another mascara that makes my bottom lashes look like they do when I wear the YSL. So if it does that for my bottom lashes, I'm going to assume they'll make your top lashes a mile longer too.
On top, I usually only wear this Lip Plumper, or I'll just wear this by itself. I've tried multiple lip plumpers including the Too Faced Extreme (which btw, didn't do anything for me unfortunately) and this is the only thing that didn't sting like crazy and gave a nice plump! It's addicting, just a fair warning.
Before I spray any setting mist, I spritz some rose water for hydration and glow. I love this one by Kanai. It's all natural and smells incredible.
Well there you have it! My top holy-grail products that I use to do my makeup during the day and at night. I would honestly die if any of these are ever discontinued, so fingers crossed they're around till I'm 85. Up next, skincare post so stayed tuned!
